The annual Christmas debate

Batman Returns.
Christmas film?

Partly. Batman Returns is Christmas-adjacent, set at Christmas without its story needing it: it scores 47 out of 100 on our Festive Factor and 34 on Cosiness, ratified against our published rubric.

Batman Returns might have more Christmas on screen than any superhero film: a tree-lighting ceremony, snow almost throughout, decorated streets, presents with unpleasant surprises inside. Count the icon types and it does very well.

Then ask what any of it means. The festive setting is a mood, and a gothic one; the story does not depend on the date, and the ending is not about goodwill, family or belief. That gap between Christmas imagery and Christmas meaning is the reason it is one of the films we calibrate the rubric against.

It is also not a film to put on with small children on your lap. Expect the two scores to land a long way apart, and expect Cosiness to be the lower one.
