The annual Christmas debate

Lethal Weapon.
Christmas film?

Partly. Lethal Weapon is Christmas-adjacent, set at Christmas without its story needing it: it scores 37 out of 100 on our Festive Factor and 45 on Cosiness, ratified against our published rubric.

Lethal Weapon opens to a Christmas song, visits a Christmas tree lot and ends at a family Christmas dinner. Its writer went on to set several more films at Christmas, so the date is no accident.

What it does not have is much Christmas in between. The setting is sunny, the plot is a crime story with no need of the season, and the threat is strong enough that Cosiness will struggle. The case for it rests almost entirely on the ending, which is warmer and more festive than the rest of the film leads you to expect.

Setting saturation and emotional payoff are the two questions to watch. Here they pull in opposite directions, and where you land depends on how much weight you give a good last ten minutes.
