The argument about Love Actually is rarely whether it is a Christmas film. It counts down the weeks to Christmas, it has a school nativity, office parties, a Christmas single and a great deal of shopping. The argument is whether people like it, which is a different question and not one the rubric answers.
It is also the most searched-for film we have measured in a British December, well ahead of Home Alone, and ritual is one of the five things Festive Factor counts.
Where it is less festive than its reputation is the ensemble: several of its stories would survive with Christmas taken out, and the payoff belongs to love more than to Christmas. If you want to mark it down, do it on plot dependency, not on the ending you would have written.
