Kiefer Sutherlandas Bradley MackAbout Tinsel Town
A vain Hollywood action star whose film franchise has just been cancelled crosses to England hoping to be taken seriously as a stage actor. His agent books him instead into an amateur Christmas pantomime of Cinderella in a snowy small town, where rehearsals with the eccentric locals, a no-nonsense choreographer and the estranged daughter he has neglected slowly take the shine off his ego.
Kiefer Sutherland sends up his own action-hero image as a fading star packed off to an amateur Christmas pantomime, and the joke suits him. Chris Foggin, who made Fisherman's Friends, knows this patch of gentle British comedy well, and Derek Jacobi and Meera Syal are good company in the rehearsal room.
The humbling arc goes exactly where you expect, and a fair stretch is backstage graft rather than Christmas proper. It is kind about panto and the volunteers who stage it. A treat for village-hall regulars who have painted scenery or sold raffle tickets at a December show.
