Neil Patrick Harrisas Adult Jake DoyleAbout 8-Bit Christmas
Visiting his childhood home, a father tells his young daughter about the winter of 1988, when he wanted a new home video-game console more than anything. As a boy he and his school friends try scheme after scheme to get hold of one, while his parents have their own ideas about what makes a good present.
A nostalgia piece that knows exactly which Christmas it is remembering: 1988, a boy, and a games console he wants more than anything. It owes an obvious debt to older childhood-Christmas films and does not hide it, but the playground schemes are funny and the parents get more sympathy than the genre usually allows.
Christmas is the deadline rather than the subject, and a birthday could carry the same story. The father's handmade gift is where it lands, and it lands softly.
