The verdict
The best Carol on film, and it is not close. Caine plays it entirely straight — no mugging, no acknowledgement that half the cast are felt — and that one decision carries the whole picture. The songs are better than they have any right to be, the Dickens language survives largely intact, and the ending lands properly rather than sentimentally. Bah humbug included at no extra charge.
