Joy Edwards has built a bestselling lifestyle brand on cookbooks that show off a warm country home and a happy family she does not actually have. When a television network announces it will film Christmas dinner at her house, she scrambles to cast the missing relatives, starting with her oldest friend Max as a pretend husband, with neighbours and a cleaner filling the other places at the table. As the live broadcast approaches, the pretence starts to wobble and something real begins to show through.
A lifestyle author who has sold the world a perfect family she does not have is told a television crew is coming to film Christmas dinner. It is a light, sweet comedy of errors, built from borrowed relatives and a best friend who clearly wants the job for real.
The festive dressing is thin, down to felt snow and yarn snowballs, so this is a Christmas film by occasion more than by heart. Think of it as a cosy, forgettable supper: pleasant company, no surprises, and over before you notice.
Our take: fine for most children from about six: there is no violence, only slapstick, a few mild words and adults drinking wine at dinner.
