A Christmas film can be cosy, frightening or somewhere in between: we judge how much Christmas is in it separately from whether it feels comforting.
Festive Factor measures Christmas content. The catalogue ruling, Essential, Adjacent, Winter or Not really, gives our overall view of whether it belongs in a Christmas selection. Cosiness describes the viewing experience. None of those is a score for filmmaking quality.
These ten familiar cases show why the distinction helps. Die Hard is currently ruled Essential in our catalogue, for example, even though audiences still disagree about it.
What the scores measure
Festive Factor considers five things: plot dependency, how much of the running time is set at Christmas, the Christmas imagery on screen, the ending's relationship to the season, and evidence of UK December search interest.
That last measure is a proxy for interest, not a viewing count. Searches may include costumes, merchandise or another work sharing a title. An October search peak does not prove that nobody watches a film in December.
The ruling adds an editorial judgement:
- Essential: a clear part of our Christmas selection.
- Adjacent: a meaningful Christmas connection, with room to argue about its importance.
- Winter: a wintry association that is broader than Christmas.
- Not really: some seasonal material, but not enough for us to recommend it chiefly as a Christmas film.
A ruling is not generated simply by comparing Festive Factor with Cosiness. A frightening film can belong in the Christmas selection, and a comforting one can have little to do with the holiday.
What Britain says when asked
In YouGov's December 2022 survey, 37% of Britons called Die Hard a Christmas film and 46% did not. Gremlins also drew more “no” responses than “yes”: 42% against 31%. Batman Returns attracted 6% “yes” and Edward Scissorhands 8%.
Those are useful snapshots of public opinion. They do not decide the contents of a film, and a minority response is not proof that a festive interpretation is impossible.
Essential in our catalogue
Is Home Alone a Christmas film?
Yes. The family trip, the empty house and the Christmas-morning reunion make the season central to this one. It is ruled Essential and carries 88/100 Festive Factor.
The burglars and household injuries are why a festive premise does not automatically produce the gentlest watch. The comedy depends on danger as well as the wish to be reunited. Read our Home Alone guide.
Is Love Actually a Christmas film?
Yes, and ruled Essential. It counts down to Christmas through office parties, a school nativity and a seasonal single. Several individual romances could happen at another time of year, but the ensemble is deliberately built around the approaching holiday.
Whether you enjoy those stories is a separate question. You do not need to like the film to recognise the work Christmas does in it. It carries 83/100 Festive Factor. Read our Love Actually guide.
Is Die Hard a Christmas film?
Our current catalogue ruling is Essential. The Christmas Eve office party brings the characters together, and the film repeatedly uses seasonal music, gifts and the wish to return to family.
It carries 63/100 Festive Factor for Festive Factor. That does not mean everyone must agree with the ruling: the YouGov result above shows the argument is still very much alive. Its summer cinema release is a different question from what happens in the story.
Die Hard · Film guide →Adjacent: Christmas matters, but the emphasis varies
Is Gremlins a Christmas film?
Yes, as an Adjacent. A Christmas present sets the story moving, and the snow, carols and decorations remain conspicuous as the town descends into chaos. It carries 54/100 Festive Factor.
The useful argument is how much the plot depends on that occasion. Could the present have been given at another time? Perhaps, but that would change the seasonal contrast the film keeps exploiting. Read our Gremlins guide.
Is Trading Places a Christmas film?
Yes, as an Adjacent. Its story spans Christmas and New Year, with an office party, festive dress and a very unhappy holiday dinner. The financial climax follows New Year, so Christmas is an important part of the journey rather than the final destination.
Its Cosiness score (63/100 Cosiness Rating) sits above its Festive Factor (46/100 Festive Factor). That is a judgement about tone, not a promise of gentle or family-friendly content. Read our Trading Places guide.
Is Batman Returns a Christmas film?
Our ratified ruling is Adjacent. The snowbound city, tree-lighting ceremony and ominous presents make Christmas visible throughout much of the film. Its lonely characters and harsh tone make it a very different seasonal choice from a family comedy.
It carries 47/100 Festive Factor for Festive Factor and 34/100 Cosiness Rating for Cosiness. The 6% “yes” in YouGov's survey shows how far our inclusion differs from that public response.
Is Lethal Weapon a Christmas film?
Our ratified ruling is Adjacent. It opens to a Christmas song, visits a Christmas-tree lot and ends with a family invitation. Much of the intervening crime story could happen outside the season, which makes the connection less concentrated than in Home Alone.
It carries 37/100 Festive Factor for Festive Factor and 45/100 Cosiness Rating for Cosiness. The warmer ending matters, but it does not erase the violence or distress elsewhere in the film.
Is The Nightmare Before Christmas a Christmas film?
Our ratified ruling is Adjacent: it is about Halloween characters attempting Christmas, so the holiday is part of the subject rather than merely the scenery.
It carries 65/100 Festive Factor for Festive Factor and 72/100 Cosiness Rating for Cosiness. It is directed by Henry Selick, from Tim Burton's conception.
There is room for both holidays in how people enjoy it. A seasonal search peak alone cannot settle that question, especially for a film with a substantial costume and merchandise life.
Not really in our catalogue
Is Edward Scissorhands a Christmas film?
Our current ruling is Not really, with 34/100 Festive Factor for Festive Factor. Christmas does matter to the later scenes, including the party, and the snowy framing is memorable. Much of the film, though, is a sunny suburban story about an outsider.
That is why we would recommend it first as a bittersweet fantasy rather than a Christmas watch. Someone who returns to it every December can reasonably give that late seasonal section more weight. Read our Edward Scissorhands guide.
A case without a catalogue ruling
Is Harry Potter a Christmas film?
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) has a memorable Christmas at school, but the story covers a school year and its main conflict extends well beyond the holiday.
We do not currently have a ratified catalogue ruling or score for it. As an editorial suggestion, it suits viewers looking for a winter-school atmosphere more than a plot centred on Christmas. That is a recommendation by mood, not an official classification.
Festive and cosy answer different questions
Die Hard carries 63/100 Festive Factor for Festive Factor and 38/100 Cosiness Rating for Cosiness. Gremlins has 54/100 Festive Factor and 35/100 Cosiness Rating respectively. Both belong in our Christmas selection despite their danger and disruption.
Meet Me in St. Louis goes the other way: 44/100 Festive Factor for Festive Factor and 91/100 Cosiness Rating for Cosiness. Its seasonal section is only part of a wider story, while its warmth extends beyond December.
Separating those questions makes it easier to choose tonight's film. You might want a great deal of Christmas and very little reassurance, or exactly the reverse.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Christmas film have to be family-friendly? No. In YouGov's 2022 survey, 13% named family suitability as an ingredient. That is some viewers, not a majority. Our Essential selections include films intended for adults.
Can horror count? Yes. Christmas setting and themes can coexist with threat. Gremlins is one example; its lower Cosiness score helps explain what sort of evening to expect.
Are the scores a ranking of the best films? No. Festive Factor measures Christmas content; Cosiness measures comfort. Our recommendations also discuss performance, pace, humour and who a film may suit.
Can the rulings change? Yes, following review. The rulings above were checked against the catalogue on 13 October 2026. The embedded scores update with the live film records.
Can I try the questions myself? Yes. Use the Sleighometer, then compare the individual judgements rather than just the total.
