The verdict
Yes, it counts. It is set at Christmas, the plot turns on a Christmas party, and the season does real work rather than sitting in the background as set dressing. That does not make it a film you put on with your nan. It is a Christmas film the way a lock-in is a night out: entirely, and not for everyone. We have done the maths and we are comfortable.
The certificate
BBFC 15 on the 1988 cinema entry (131m 52s), ratings info: strong violence, language, nudity and hard drug use. Every subsequent BBFC entry, including the 2013 cinema re-release, is also 15. NOTE FOR MANUAL CHECK: this contradicts the widespread online claim that it was an 18 in Britain.
