Tim Allenas Scott CalvinAbout The Santa Clause 2
Eight years after inheriting the job of Father Christmas, a divorced dad discovers his contract carries another condition: he must be married by Christmas Eve or lose the role for good. With his teenage son landed on the naughty list, he heads home to set things right and find a wife, leaving a toy replica of himself in charge of the workshop, where it quickly turns into a tyrant.
A sequel that knows its premise is thinner and leans on the silliness instead.
Tim Allen spends half the film on a rushed courtship back home, which drags, and the other half watching a stiff plastic double of himself turn the workshop into a police state. That second strand is where the real laughs are.
It is softer than the original and has less of its bite, and the romance runs strictly by numbers. For a family that already loves the first film, it earns its place on a December weekend.
Can the kids watch?
Our take: rated U for very mild peril. The only menace is a toy tyrant and his marching toy soldiers, pitched squarely as comedy, so most five-year-olds will cope happily.
BBFC advice: Contains very mild peril.
