The story

About The Holiday Calendar

A photographer stuck in a dull seasonal job is given an antique wooden advent calendar that belonged to her late grandmother. Each day a small toy appears behind its doors, and the objects begin to foreshadow what happens to her next, pulling her between a charming new arrival in town and the lifelong best friend who has just come home. As Christmas nears she works out what the calendar was really made to do.

The CineClaus verdict

A Netflix romcom built on one genuinely good idea: an antique advent calendar that hides a tiny toy behind each door and quietly predicts the next day. Sadly the film never trusts that idea, spending most of its time on a love triangle you will have solved before the calendar is a week in.

Kat Graham and Quincy Brown are likeable leads, and even the rival suitor is treated kindly. Nothing goes properly wrong. Pleasant and forgettable in equal measure, and well suited to an early December evening spent writing cards.

PG

Our take: no peril of any kind, so primary schoolers can watch safely, though under-tens may tire of the grown-up romance well before the final door opens.
