A small stone cottage at night with snow on the roof and warm light in every window, a figure silhouetted in the open doorway, a car and a suitcase in the lane.

The verdict

A cottage fantasy first and a romance second, and it knows it. The lanes and the snowed-in gate do more emotional work than either plot strand manages. Long, comfortable, entirely predictable, and much better company than that description makes it sound. Half the country has spent a December quietly wondering what that cottage would cost. Best watched in the flat stretch between Christmas and New Year, lights off, something to eat.

BBFC 12A on theatrical release, classified 21/11/2006 for UIP (135m 28s). The release page renders consumer advice only, so the category was taken from BBFC's own Annual Report 2006, which lists the title in its 12A section. BBFC also lists a 2007 home entertainment version (130m 3s) and a 2016 cinema entry (135m 30s); the home entertainment category is not stated on the page and has not been inferred here.
