Michael Keatonas Jack FrostAbout Jack Frost
A rock musician who keeps breaking promises to his young son is killed in a car crash on a winter night. A year later the boy plays the harmonica his father left him and the snowman in the garden comes to life with his dad inside it, giving the pair one last snowy spell to do the things they missed before the thaw comes.
A grief film wearing a snowman costume, and braver about it than its reputation suggests.
Michael Keaton's unreliable musician dad dies early, comes back as an animatronic from Jim Henson's Creature Shop and gets one winter to make amends. The puppet is the sticking point. Its face sits somewhere between lovable and unsettling, and critics were not kind.
Underneath, the father and son story is sincere and the goodbye is properly sad. Christmas is mostly scenery here. Choose it for a family ready to talk about loss, not one hoping for a snowman romp.
Can the kids watch?
Our take: mild language and innuendo explain the PG, but a parent dies in a night-time car crash early on and the final goodbye is genuinely sad, so make sure your child is ready for that.
