The story

About Christmas Above the Clouds

Ella Neezer, a workaholic agency boss, books a long-haul flight on Christmas Eve so she can skip the holiday, dragging her assistant Bobbi along and running into her ex-fiancé Jake at the airport. During the flight three spirits take her through her past, present and future, and she lands on Christmas Day with her priorities rearranged. A comic, modern reworking of Dickens's A Christmas Carol, led by Erin Krakow and Tyler Hynes, with Emily Tennant as Bobbi.

The CineClaus verdict

A workaholic boss tries to dodge Christmas by flying as far from it as she can, and a Dickens-shaped night in the air makes sure she can't. It is silly, sweet and as predictable as you hope: three spirits, an ex-fiancé on the same flight, a pilot in a Santa act.

Erin Krakow plays Ella with enough bite that the thaw feels earned, and the plane is a neat, contained stage. Pure Hallmark comfort food, best watched with a mince pie.

Can the kids watch?

Not BBFC rated

Our take: fine for most children: gentle comedy and romance, though a vision of a sick boy's future may upset younger ones.
