A few days before Christmas, a small-time cabaret singer finishes a show at an old people's home and sets off for a festive engagement that might be his break. In a storm his van dies on a forest road, and a lonely innkeeper, once a stand-up comic, offers him a room. By morning the innkeeper has decided the singer is his wife Gloria, who walked out on him, and he means to keep her, Christmas tree and all, while the men of the nearby village have ideas of their own. Fabrice Du Welz's debut is a slow, grim backwoods ordeal with a pitch-black streak of comedy.
Calvaire is a Christmas film only in the bleakest sense.
A small-time singer breaks down in the woods a few days before Christmas, and the lonely innkeeper who takes him in decides he is the wife who walked out. Fabrice Du Welz lets the dread build for a long time before the cruelty starts, and the Christmas tree and the dinner only make it worse.
Admirers of grim European horror will enjoy the craft and the deadpan black comedy. Anyone after festive company should keep well away.
Our take: adults only: torture, sexual violence and a crucifixion, in a film that is grim from start to finish.
