The story

About Beethoven's Christmas Adventure

A Christmas elf takes off in Santa's sleigh by accident, crash-lands in a snowy small town and loses the magic bag of toys to a pair of greedy toy-shop owners. Beethoven, the big St Bernard, talking for the first time, teams up with a teenage boy to get the bag back and the sleigh home before Christmas is ruined. The seventh film in the series, made for DVD, with John Cleese as narrator and Tom Arnold as the voice of the dog.

The CineClaus verdict

The seventh Beethoven film went straight to DVD, and it shows.

A Christmas elf crashes Santa's sleigh into a snowy small town, a pair of greedy toy-shop owners grab the bag of presents, and the big St Bernard, talking for the first time, helps a teenage boy win it back before Christmas. It is loud, cheap and wall-to-wall slapstick, and most critics were unkind.

Small children will have a lovely time, though, John Cleese narrates, and the message about giving lands gently. One for the under-nines and a patient grown-up.

The family desk

Can the kids watch?

U

Our take: rated U by the BBFC for very mild language and slapstick violence. Plenty of pratfalls and chases, nobody is ever in real danger and the ending is happy, so the whole family can watch this one.
