The story

About A Merry Scottish Christmas

A brother and sister who have barely spoken in years are summoned by their mother to spend Christmas at a castle in Scotland. Before the bags are unpacked she tells them a secret about the family that changes what the castle means to all three of them, and the siblings have the holiday to decide what to do about it and about each other. Lacey Chabert and Scott Wolf play the siblings, with Fiona Bell as their mother.

The CineClaus verdict

Less a romance than a family reunion with a romance attached, which is its charm.

Lacey Chabert and Scott Wolf, siblings on Party of Five in the 1990s, play estranged siblings again, summoned to a Scottish castle by a mother with news. Expect kilts, ponies, a solstice bonfire and a good deal to drink; do not expect much tinsel, because the Christmas here is mostly the occasion.

Most of it was shot in Ireland. Nobody will mind.

Can the kids watch?

Not BBFC rated

Our take: not rated by the BBFC. No bad language reported, but a lot of drinking and some bickering between grown-up siblings. Best for teenagers and adults; younger children will lose interest.
