Our take
A rare trip away from home, and the change of scene suits the show: put the same people in a remote lodge with nowhere to go and the pettiness only gets worse. The lockdown-era backstory dates it a little, but the arguments over gifts, walks and party games are timeless, and the trip down memory lane through Christmas telly is a gift for anyone who grew up with it. Cathy at full volume is the reason to watch.
What happens
Covid-19 has wrecked Colin and Cathy's plans for Christmas in Dubai, so they rent a luxury lodge in the Scottish Highlands and invite Beth, Eric, Christine, Ian and Gordon up for the days between Christmas and New Year. A roaring fire and a traditional Christmas tree greet the guests. Colin lists the outdoor activities on the doorstep but admits that he and Cathy have just been sitting in watching television, and when Beth asks how their Christmas was, the pair share a look before insisting it was brilliant. Gifts are swapped, and Cathy struggles to hide what she thinks of hers. When Ian and Gordon share some big news, Cathy is more determined than ever to get the party started, while Eric, Ian and Gordon would rather go for a walk; with Christine already out, it falls to Beth to decide whether to side with Cathy. As the party gets going the group swap memories of favourite Christmas television, and Christine remembers Val Doonican. Then Gordon reveals a talent for impressions and does Cathy, the mood turns, and Cathy pushes Beth to her limit.
