Only Fools and Horses

Miami Twice: Oh To Be In England

Christmas special, first shown 25 Dec 1991, 85 min

Our take

The big-budget payoff to the American story, shot on location and played as a full comedy thriller. The hero's resemblance to the mob boss is the main joke, and the chase scenes are well staged. It is long and the jokes are broader than usual, but as a Christmas Day spectacle it delivers, and the final gag back in London is a good one.

What happens

In Miami, nothing goes to plan. Del has handled the accommodation and transport, so the brothers find themselves in a dodgy camper van, which then vanishes while they are in a smart nightclub. Things get far worse when Del is mistaken for a local mafia godfather, the double of the boss Vincenzo Ochetti, and the gangster's men decide he would make a perfect decoy for their boss. The hospitality the Trotters are shown is not what it seems, and once they realise it they make a run for it. Help comes from an unlikely quarter: Boycie, Marlene and their baby Tyler, who happen to be in the States too. The brothers make it home in one piece, only to find the flat full of crates of the pre-blessed wine, which has been declared unfit for Holy Communion.
