Our take
Eight minutes, one con and a perfectly placed final sign: a neat little Christmas sketch that shows the whole show's engine in miniature. The younger brother's good deed turns into the older one's sales pitch, and the vicar's reaction is the best line. Hard to see now, which makes it a curiosity for completists rather than a Christmas Day staple, but a sharp one.
What happens
Del has a stack of telescopic artificial Christmas trees, lights and baubles included, and even at six pounds each he cannot shift them; there are still 149 left. Over a cup of tea at Sid's burger van he lets slip, with a show of conscience, how sad it is that the market traders cannot afford a tree for the local church this year, especially for the orphans. Left to mind the stock, a touched Rodney sneaks off and gives the church one of the trees. The vicar is delighted, and quickly lets on that there was never any appeal. Rodney hurries back to the stall to find his brother already selling the rest as the tree used and recommended by the Church of England. A short sketch rather than a full episode, made for a BBC Christmas compilation.
Can the kids watch it?
Fine for children of any age who can follow it: a gentle sketch with no strong language.
