Our take
A New Year's Day episode about fresh starts: a con man uncle, a pensioner taking up stunts and the brothers being made to talk. Short on plot and with nothing Christmassy, but the family scenes land, and John Masterson is a welcome new face as the uncle. Fans of the family scenes will get the most from it; there is little here for anyone after a seasonal episode.
What happens
The New Year is all about reconciliation and fresh starts in the Brown household, but not everyone seems to have got the message. Grandad's brother Mickey is fresh out of prison and stops by for a visit. Everyone except Grandad is suspicious when he asks for 5,000 euros to invest in a South African gold mine. Winnie, inspired by Cathy's book, is on a daredevil mission to change the trajectory of her life, and Agnes's sons are made to have a heart to heart.
Can the kids watch it?
Rated 15 by the BBFC for strong language; the swearing and near-the-knuckle innuendo run all the way through, so it is for 15 and over, not a family watch.
