Mrs Brown's Boys

Mammy's Mechanical Merriment

Christmas special, first shown 25 Dec 2021, 30 min

Our take

A Christmas Day episode with a church choir, a tree shortage and a murder mystery night at the pub, which is a fair amount of festive business for half an hour. Its audience of 2.8 million was down a million on the year before. It is dedicated to Dennis Knotts, who died in 2021. The pub murder mystery is the highlight, and it is about as busy as the show gets in half an hour.

What happens

It is Christmas in Finglas once again. Agnes Brown has been recruited to the church choir, but she is under strict instructions from Father McBride that there is to be no singing and certainly no dancing. That is not the only thing off limits: a Christmas tree shortage means Buster has to be even more creative than usual to impress Agnes. Meanwhile Dermot and Buster have organised this year's festivities at the local pub and are holding a murder mystery night in aid of alcoholic greyhounds, and the whole community turns out. What could possibly go wrong? According to the BBFC, the game sees the priest unhappy at having to play a rabbi, and there is a comic misunderstanding involving Agnes and a priest.

Can the kids watch it?

Rated 15 by the BBFC for strong language; the swearing and near-the-knuckle innuendo run all the way through, so it is for 15 and over, not a family watch.
