The One with Christmas in Tulsa

Series 9, episode 10, first shown 12 Dec 2002, 22 min

Our take

The show's last Christmas episode is also a clip show, which explains why it ranks low on most lists. The new material is thin and leans on a jealousy plot that has not aged well. Still, it brings a long-running storyline to a festive close, Chandler gets home for Christmas, and Selma Blair's Wendy adds a little sparkle. The clips make a handy tour of earlier holidays.

What happens

Chandler's job has sent him to Tulsa, and now he must stay there over Christmas and New Year to meet a deadline or lose his job. Back in New York the friends miss him, and Monica most of all. In Tulsa his staff are miserable about missing their families, and the holiday bonus he arranged turns out to be a donation in their names to the New York ballet. Remembering Christmases with his friends, which the episode shows in a run of clips from earlier holiday episodes, Chandler sends everyone home. Only Wendy, a senior colleague, stays behind to keep him company. When Monica phones and learns who he is working with, and that Wendy was once a runner-up for Miss Oklahoma, she starts to worry. Chandler reassures her, but Wendy then makes a pass at him. Fed up with the job, the city and the separation, he quits on the spot and arrives home in New York in time for Christmas with his wife and friends.
