Rohan Campbellas Billy ChapmanAbout Silent Night, Deadly Night
A boy who watched his parents killed on Christmas Eve by a man in a Santa suit grows up into a drifter who puts on the red suit himself and works through a list of people he has judged deserving, one kill for each day of December. Settling in a small town for the season, he falls for a young woman who works at a local shop, and she pushes him to face what he has become as a new wave of festive killings closes in.
A remake that keeps the red suit and the grim childhood prologue, then rebuilds everything else as an advent calendar of kills, one door a day through December. Mike P. Nelson plays it as black comedy with a love story threaded through, and the killings are properly brutal.
The swings in tone don't always sit easily, and the romance can feel bolted on between the bloodbaths. Horror fans raised on the original will get the most from it, as a nastier, sillier companion piece.
Can the kids watch?
Our take: far too gory for children or younger teens: the killings are frequent, bloody and shown in close detail, and the killer does it all in the red suit.
