Wilfred Butler dies in a fire in 1987 and leaves his mansion to his grandson Jeffrey, with instructions that it be kept exactly as it is. Twenty-five years on, Jeffrey ignores the will and arranges to sell the house for cash, the money due on Christmas Day. As he and his lawyer arrive to close the deal, and a young journalist, Diane, digs into the family's past, someone with an axe is already living in the house. A low-budget Welsh slasher and an unofficial remake of the 1972 American film Silent Night, Bloody Night.
A cheap Welsh slasher that gets more from its Christmas deadline than its budget suggests.
The house sale due on Christmas Day gives the killings a clock to run against, and a murder with fairy lights is the one moment that properly uses the season. Elsewhere it is a dark old house, a masked man with an axe and some uneven acting from a local cast.
Fans of the 1972 original will find a respectful, rough-edged remake.
Our take: not for children: axe murders, a disembowelling and a masked killer stalking a dark house make this strictly one for adults.
