Warm in tone. Mild threat. A content ending.
Festive Factor measures how Christmassy a film is. Five ingredients add up to 100: story (30), setting (20), seasonal details (15), emotional heart (20) and returning tradition (15).
Cosiness is a separate score for warmth of tone, sense of safety, visual comfort, a reassuring ending and how easily you can settle into it.
How the Festive Factor works →A young reindeer with one antler smaller than the other dreams of helping Santa grant children's wishes. When the snow globe that records the year's wishes is stolen, he is the one blamed. He teams up with a lonely boy to clear his name and save the season, and they start a new holiday tradition on the way. It is an hour-long computer-animated special made for American television.
A mild, bright hour for small children, and not much more.
The mystery is easy to solve and the lesson, that being odd is fine, is delivered plainly. A stolen wish globe gives it a festive spine, but this is an American television special with no carols and little of the cosy trimmings, so it is a pleasant filler rather than a night's plan.
Good for a rainy December afternoon with under-eights, and forgettable for everyone else.
Our take: fine for young children, with a cloaked thief and a few comic falls but no real peril.
