The story

About Oh. What. Fun.

A Texas mother does all of Christmas for her husband and three grown-up children, who barely notice and never say thank you. When the whole family heads off to the Christmas Eve show she booked for them and forgets to take her, she leaves too, setting off alone on a road trip towards the daytime television host she idolises while the family tries to cope without her. Michael Showalter directs Michelle Pfeiffer, with Felicity Jones, Chloe Grace Moretz, Denis Leary and Jason Schwartzman.

The CineClaus verdict

Michelle Pfeiffer plays a mother who does all of Christmas for a family who never say thank you, until they set off for the big Christmas Eve show without her and she sets off too. It is a good idea with a starry cast, Felicity Jones, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jason Schwartzman and Eva Longoria among them, and it looks expensive.

But the jokes are thin, the family never feels real and the happy ending is unearned. Pfeiffer is worth watching. The film around her mostly is not.

Can the kids watch?

12

Our take: rated 12 by the BBFC for drug misuse, language and crude humour: adults smoke joints, one gets drunk and is sick, and there is strong language. One for teenagers and up, and there is not much here for them either.

On set

Two neighbouring houses, one street

The location team picked a Buckhead house for the Clauster family home and a larger house directly across the street for the rival neighbours, so the two households really do face each other.

Movie magic

Showalter's eighties-flavoured dance montage

The director's favourite scene is a bar montage in which Sammy dances with a new friend. He has said it was inspired by the 1980s films of John Hughes and Cameron Crowe.
