The story

About Fatman

Father Christmas is a weary, hard-drinking man whose workshop is losing money as children behave worse each year, so he reluctantly takes a contract from the US military to keep his elves employed. Meanwhile a spoilt, vindictive boy who found coal in his stocking hires a professional killer with his own childhood grudge, and the hitman heads north for a violent showdown at the snowbound workshop.

The CineClaus verdict

Mel Gibson plays a weary, hard-drinking Father Christmas who takes a military contract to keep his failing workshop afloat, while a hired killer with a grudge heads north to find him. It is a good dark joke, and the Nelms brothers tell it almost entirely straight, which lends some bite but drains much of the fun.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste supplies what warmth there is. The final shoot-out is long and bloody. Try it if your seasonal taste runs sour; anyone expecting an action comedy should skip it.

The family desk

Can the kids watch?

15

Our take: bloody gun violence, a stabbing, a child in real danger and plenty of strong language mean this is strictly a grown-up watch.

On set

A shootout filmed at minus 36 in Ottawa

The climactic gunfight took four days to shoot in Ottawa, at around minus 36 degrees Celsius. Crew wore heavy cold-weather gear, and Mel Gibson reportedly stayed out in costume and fingerless gloves through 12 to 14 hour days rather than retreating to the warming tent.

On set

The afghan that had to come from the directors' mum

The script wanted an oversized afghan made by Ruth Cringle. Ottawa shops had nothing close, so the brothers asked their own mother to send one, which echoed a blanket she had once made for them.

On set

Cookies the crew kept stealing

A local baker made custom treats for the elves to hold on screen. The crew kept trying to grab them between takes, and the directors described them as a precious commodity on set.

Movie magic

Santa kept a secret for the first half hour

The directors deliberately left the first 20 to 30 minutes ambiguous about who Chris Cringle really is, and steered clear of the usual flying-across-the-moon imagery in favour of darker folklore versions of Father Christmas.
