The story

About Eight Crazy Nights

A hard-drinking, wrecked-up young man in a small New England town is sentenced to community service under the watch of the local basketball referee after a Hanukkah-night rampage. Over the festive season, a visit from his past and an act of selfless kindness slowly wear down his anger. An adult animated musical comedy from Adam Sandler, with a Hanukkah heart and a Christmas backdrop.

The CineClaus verdict

A Hanukkah film in a Christmas coat, and a crude one.

An adult cartoon musical about a drunk given one last chance, it trades on Adam Sandler's voices and a lot of toilet humour, and about half the jokes land. Underneath sits a sincere story about kindness and grief that arrives late and a little sappy.

The snow, the carolers and the mall are there, but the season is background rather than the engine. Watch it as a rude, odd, occasionally touching festive curiosity, with grown-ups only.

The family desk

Can the kids watch?

12A

Our take: not for young children. Crude jokes, swearing, drunken behaviour and some sexual humour make it one for teenagers and up.

Film facts &
behind the scenes

For the fans who stay after the credits.

On set

Two years and about 34 million dollars

Kearsley says the first producer treated it like a direct-to-video job with an unrealistic schedule. After a change at the top, the budget rose to about 34 million dollars and the work stretched over roughly two years.

Music & sound

The mall song was moved off the opening

A song called At the Mall was dropped from the start of the film because the team feared too much Whitey up front would put audiences off, so the story opens on Davey instead. It survives on the soundtrack album.

On set

Real shop names, chosen on purpose

The film is set in the present day, so Kearsley wanted real brand names rather than invented ones. He says the team worked from a list of acceptable brands and that one chain objected to a lyric rhyming its name with something rude.
