The story

About Don't Open Till Christmas

In the days before Christmas, someone is murdering men dressed as Santa Claus across London, starting with a wealthy man stabbed in front of guests at a costume party. Scotland Yard's Inspector Harris and his sergeant, Powell, chase a killer who stays a step ahead, while the dead man's daughter, Kate, and her busking boyfriend, Cliff, are drawn into the case and fall under suspicion. A peep-show worker who witnesses one of the killings becomes the next target, and the trail leads back to a Christmas long ago.

The CineClaus verdict

A British slasher in which somebody spends the run-up to Christmas murdering every man in London who puts on a Santa suit. It is ramshackle and mean-spirited, and its troubled making shows in scenes that were plainly reshot with a different cast.

The kills are inventive, and it catches the grubbiness of early-80s Soho almost by accident. The season gives the killer his list and nothing more. One for slasher completists and bad-film nights, never the family sofa.
