Renée Zellwegeras Bridget JonesAbout Bridget Jones's Diary
A thirty-something London book publicist starts the new year vowing to sort out her drinking, smoking, weight and love life, and records every lapse in a painfully honest diary. Over the next twelve months she is pulled between her charming, caddish boss and a stiff barrister she first met at a family buffet, and slowly works out which of them is worth her time.
A Christmas film only at the edges.
It opens at a New Year family buffet and ends in the snow the following December, and in between it is a year of London romcom that could sit in any month. That thin frame does not stop it earning a December rewatch. Zellweger's comic timing carries the whole thing, and Grant is plainly enjoying himself as the wrong choice.
Made for a night in with friends who can quote it, with the snowy finale as the reward for a year of bad decisions.
Can the kids watch?
Our take: strong language, sex references and a comic punch-up earned it a BBFC 15, so this is one for older teenagers and adults rather than the family sofa.
