About A Dog's Perfect Christmas
A grandfather, his teenage granddaughter and a basset hound try to keep a family together through a difficult Christmas. Cathryn Michon directs this adaptation of W. Bruce Cameron's novel, with Dennis Quaid, Milo Ventimiglia and Mary Steenburgen among the cast.
A grieving grandfather, a sulking teenager and a basset hound with opinions: this is a family that has stopped talking, seen through the one member who notices. It is gentle and a little sad.
Christmas is the backdrop, not the engine, and the grief does the heavy lifting. The ending is warm without pretending the loss away. A cosy evening film, with tissues nearby.
Can the kids watch?
Our take: suits children of about eight and up who can cope with grief and a family illness; younger ones may find it sad, so watch the first part together.
