The story

About A Christmas Carol: The Musical

A television musical built on the Menken and Ahrens stage show, retelling Dickens on Christmas Eve. A tight-fisted moneylender, Scrooge, is visited by his late partner Marley and three spirits who walk him through his past, the present and a grim future. Songs carry the story, and on Christmas morning he rushes to the Cratchit family to put things right.

The CineClaus verdict

The Dickens story with the songs turned up, and the songs are the reason to watch.

Alan Menken's tunes carry a faithful retelling from Christmas Eve night to the morning after, with Kelsey Grammer playing Scrooge as a man more wounded than wicked. The ghost number with the chains is properly spooky and the graveyard stretch will worry small children.

The finish is warm and loud and sung together. Put it on for a family that likes a sing-along more than a snowball of sentiment.

Can the kids watch?

Not BBFC rated

Our take: fine from about eight, though the chained ghosts and the graveyard scene can frighten younger children.
