The Royle Family

The Royle Family at Christmas

Series 3, episode 7, first shown 25 Dec 2000, 30 min

Our take

Half an hour of a family meeting the in-laws on the worst possible day for it, and the culture clash is as gentle as it is sharp. It is slighter than the 1999 episode, with no single big moment, but the comedy of politeness under strain is spot on. Jim's sulk and its cure are the spine; Sheridan Smith, John Henshaw and Sharon Duce make strong early guests.

What happens

A year on, Christmas Day at the Royles' doubles as Baby David's first birthday, and the family gather in the living room to celebrate in their own particular way. Barbara has invited Antony's girlfriend Emma and her parents, Valerie and Roger Kavanagh, so the Royles meet their son's prospective in-laws for the first time. The Kavanaghs are vegetarian, which does not sit easily with a household built around a Christmas dinner, and the visit leaves Jim with a sour taste in his mouth. Denise, Dave, Nana and Darren are all there for the day. Just when Jim's Christmas looks spoiled, an unexpected present arrives and puts the smile back on his face. It was the last episode of the original run: the show did not return until The Queen of Sheba in 2006.

Can the kids watch it?

Rated 12 by the BBFC on DVD for moderate sex references, so best for teenagers and up.
