Christmas TV

Last of the Summer Wine Christmas specials

British, BBC One, first shown 1973

About the show

Roy Clarke's gentle sitcom about elderly men in a Yorkshire Pennine town who refuse to grow up, spending their days wandering the hills, getting into scrapes and dodging the town's formidable women. It began as a Comedy Playhouse pilot in 1973 and ran until 2010, 295 episodes over 31 series with every script by Clarke, making it Britain's longest-running sitcom. The trio changed over the years, most famously Bill Owen, Peter Sallis and Brian Wilde. Christmas specials were part of the furniture from 1978, from half-hour Christmas Day episodes to feature-length specials such as Getting Sam Home, and BBC Four was still repeating them on Christmas Eve 2023.
