Our take
A cheerful superhero comic in Christmas wrapping paper: a nanny with a double life, a reporter who never quite notices, and brain-swapping villains in a New York skyscraper. It is light, quick and family friendly, festive mostly in its Christmas Eve opening, and Justin Chatwin and Charity Wakefield play the romance with real sweetness. Fun rather than essential, but it knows exactly what it is.
What happens
On Christmas Eve in 1990s New York, a young boy, Grant Gordon, saves the Doctor's life while he is dangling off the side of a skyscraper, and the Doctor accidentally gives him superhuman powers. Decades later Grant has become the Ghost, a masked superhero who saves New Yorkers from catastrophe, while hiding behind spectacles as a nanny for his best friend Lucy, an investigative reporter. When the brain-swapping agents of Harmony Shoal reveal their plan for world domination, the Doctor and Nardole are already on the scene. They join forces with Grant and Lucy to save Manhattan, and the question running through it all is how long it will take Lucy to realise that the Ghost and Grant are the same man.
Can the kids watch it?
A light, family-friendly superhero adventure; we found only a PG-rated BBFC trailer for it, and it suits most children from about 7.
