Call the Midwife Christmas specials

About the show

Heidi Thomas's BBC One drama, made by Neal Street Productions and first inspired by the memoirs of the midwife Jennifer Worth, follows the nuns and nurse-midwives of a convent in Poplar in London's East End, from the late 1950s through the 1960s. Since 2012 every series has been joined by a feature-length special on Christmas Day, and the specials have become one of the most-watched programmes of the day, topping the Christmas Day ratings in 2016, 2017 and 2018. They mix births and hardship with carols, nativity plays and snow, and several take the team far from Poplar: to South Africa in 2016, a Mother House in 2018 and the Outer Hebrides in 2019. From 2024 the Christmas story was told in two parts.
