Channel 5's 2020 adaptation of James Herriot's much-loved books, made by Playground, follows a young Scottish vet who joins a country practice in the Yorkshire Dales in the late 1930s, and the household around him: his mercurial boss, the boss's charming younger brother, their housekeeper and the farmer's daughter he falls for. Filmed around Grassington, it carries the story from the late 1930s through the Second World War and into peacetime. Since its first series it has ended almost every year with a Christmas special on Channel 5 in the week before Christmas, full of Christmas Eve parties, nativity plays, snow and animals in trouble; the 2025 special was the sixth. It is not the BBC series of 1978 to 1990.
